MOST DEADLIEST MOUNTAINS TO SOAR IN THE WORLD
These mountains are called eight-thousanders because they all scale above 8,000 meters above sea level. Most of these mountains have similar characteristics that are a danger to mountaineers. These are the top eight most dangerous peaks and why.
1ANNAPURNA PEAK
Mount Annapurna is considered the deadliest mountain in the world. This fact is supported by statistical data from the Himalayan database. The mountain also holds its title as the deadliest mountain in the world Guinness book of records. The death rate is the highest among all the mountains of the world.
Mount Annapurna has a striking 8,091 meter above sea level that has attracted a lot of people to their ultimate and untimely death. Since 1900, an estimated 244 expeditions have resulted in 72 deaths. Annapurna remains the deadliest mountain to summit because of its harsh and intolerable climatic conditions. It is cold and covered with snow throughout the year. It receives high-velocity winds and snowfall every season. Annapurna also is full of sharp ridges increasing the death toll on the mountain. The Annapurna peak is also so secluded which makes immediate response for help almost impossible leading to deaths that would be avoided.
2KANGCHENJUNGA PEAK
Mount Kanchenjunga comes second with an equally alarming rate of 29.1% deaths among all its expeditions. This number makes one think again about their expedition on a mountain of such a high altitude and a high rate of death. Kanchenjunga mountains standing at 8,586 meters high with its glittering, shining snow tops might fool one into not believing the possible dangers in this mountain. It's among the most treacherous peaks to summit due to its falling and unstable ice, and high altitude pulmonary edema which is a swelling of the brain that results from leakage of cerebral blood vessels because of low oxygen levels above 8000meters.
Avalanches and below-freezing conditions do not make soaring this mountain easy. The most surprising part is that it's found that Annapurna's deaths occur during descent while still above 8,000 meters.
3K2 PEAK
At 8,611 meters above sea level is this beautiful K2 mountain located in the Karakoram range in India. This mountain is also the second-largest mountain after Mount Everest. K2 mountain happens to be the third most dangerous mountain supported by its high death rate over the years.
At a total of 22.9%, 91people of the 367 expeditions succumbed to their death under harsh conditions in the mountain. For every four people who summit the mountain approximately one dies. The mountain is hard to summit because of its inclement and colder weather conditions. Extreme storms that span several days duration claim several lives.
The altitude of the mountain naturally, because of its height causes low oxygen levels immensely affecting the climber with only a third of oxygen available. The beauty of K2 mountain camouflages the constant avalanches and its steep passengers which more often than not, claim the lives of the mountaineers.
4DHAULAGIRI PEAK
Dhaulagiri is one of the mountain ranges in Nepal. It's located 34 kilometers west of Annapurna. Standing stunningly at the height of 8,167 meters above sea level.
This mountain is the fourth most dangerous mountain to climb in the world. It's a difficult and technical mountain regardless of the route taken requiring a high level of skill in climbing and preparations. Among the 388 attempted expeditions over the years, Dhaulagiri has claimed a shocking number of life climbers at 22%.
The mountain is known for its hard elevation, steep slopes, extreme weather conditions, avalanches, and unpredicted weather conditions that make it one of the deadliest mountains to summit. The mountaineers also succumbed to pulmonary edema because of the high altitude.
5NANGA PARBAT PEAK
The beautiful sight of this mountain should not blind anyone because of its record of deaths over the years.
Nanga Parbat peak with shimmering white snow ranges stands at an altitude of 8,126 meters above sea level. It holds the fourth position with an average of 20.8% of people out of 400 expeditions losing their lives. Some of the reasons that make this mountain difficult to summit include difficult terrains and unpredictable avalanches.
The poor air traffic response because the peak is isolated worsens the situation. Nanga Parbat mountain rivals K2 in terms of the technicality of the rock walls and harsh conditions that require skill and proper training to summit it.
6EVEREST PEAK
Mount Everest holds the title as the tallest mountain and the most summitted mountain in the world. It however has claimed the lives of climbers because of its remarkably dangerous nature. It has recorded around 210 deaths from more than 3,600 attempts on the summit.
It is located in the Himalayas ranges with a striking elevation of 8,848 meters above sea level. The mountain poses life-threatening conditions for the climber like altitude sickness attributed to all high mountains because of reduced oxygen levels, unpredictable weather conditions, extremely cold temperatures dropping to an alarming -73 degrees celsius, and avalanches.
Mount Everest is also known for its violently notorious storms at the top and strong winds. Most of the risk associated with Mount Everest is the lack of experience and not knowing when to turn back causing most mountaineers to their lives. The exposure and exhaustion contribute to accidental falls and lead to life-threatening situations.
7MAKALU PEAK
Makalu mountain located in Nepal is the seventh most dangerous mountain in the world with a rising death toll of 13.6% of all expeditions. Makalu is one of the harder and more technical mountains to soar among the eight-thousanders because of its four-sided pyramidal ice-covered peak that requires proficiency.
It has sharp-edged ridges that have steep drops on both sides making it susceptible to falls. In wet conditions, the ridges can be very slippery.
8MATTERHORN MOUNTAIN
This beautiful mountain of the Alps located on the Swiss and Italian border is among the deadliest mountains to soar in the world. Its large, and almost symmetric pyramidal peak of 4,478 meters above sea level has claimed many lives totaling 500 since its first summit in 1865.
The mountain is known for its unstable rocks, and developmental cracks leading to rock shedding. Rock shedding causes unstable grounds and accidents for other climbers at lower altitudes. The mountain was closed for several days in 2003 after a major heat wave resulted in 35,000 cubic feet of rock shedding off.
