6 COMMON WORKPLACE PROBLEMS AND HOW TO APPROACH THEM
All working individuals spend a great deal of their time and energy in their workplaces and it's only normal to confront all sorts of problems while at it. It at times becomes a great source of stress and despair for them.
All the perks that come with all those long hours affect the individual. Imagine a nurse or a doctor or any other individual in a hospital setting providing care all day, from listening to depressing stories to passing sad news to families and patients and dealing with loss and death. It can be too much to absorb. It transforms your view of things and even affects your personal life as well.
Working, apart from money, there are a lot of other things going on, from friendships to those individuals who you don't, to bosses. They all nurture our human disposition. Some of these development processes bring out the best in us.
Below is a list of problems you presumably have encountered before if you are a working individual, or you might just encounter soon. It's a plus if you are aware and well-equipped if need be to resolve them.
1TOO MUCH WORK
This is a common problem across many fields of work. Many individuals find themselves with too much workload and in most situations, lost on how to tell their bosses or colleagues about it.
This problem could be brought about by certain situations in your job ie very few employees or on leave employees and you're forced to carry their burdens.
How to approach it
Communication with your bosses and your colleagues is the first step. Set up a meeting or any other form of formal polite communication and explain to them why you cannot be able to handle all the tasks assigned to you. Ask for more time to finish or ask them to get more helping hands.
2 HOW THINGS ARE DONE
We all know that controlling individual who is obsessed with how things should be done to detail. This might just be your coworker or your boss.
Everybody has a way of doing things and what is important is final work and productivity. Some are even down to the smallest fragments like how files are arranged or how you write your emails and this pisses you so much. Here is what to do.
How to approach it
✓ Explain to them that at the end of it all, quality matters. For instance, the number of hours spent sitting in front of a computer has nothing to do with the quality of work produced. One could only spend minimal time doing great work.
✓ Ask your bosses or colleagues to understand your differences as long as you're productive.
✓ Make sure you keep your part of the bargain and be productive.
3IMPOSSIBLE TO WORK WITH COLLEAGUES
Most often than not you will find yourself with individuals with whom it is just impossible to create a rapport. No meeting or conversations of any kind yield anything but discords and anger.
Everything you do and say somehow offends them and maybe they are always doing things that dent your reputation this can have a very big negative effect on your career or your projects if you are working together on something. They also make your mood sour all the time.
How to approach it
✓ Listen more. Maybe you have never understood this fellow because you have never taken the time to listen to them. Next time you meet them, actually listen to them and you might just be surprised.
✓ Do not be quick to judge. Pride blinds us to the real situation at hand. You have presumed that they dislike you and they have nothing meaningful to say. Put your bias aside and be open-minded.
Try to figure out where their thoughts, feelings, and actions are stemming from. This will shed light on your next step to creating a good working relationship.
✓ Make it work. No matter how hard you have tried, make it work. If you have to finish your projects together then do it regardless of your feelings towards this person and do a good job.
✓ Be kind to them. Sometimes all it takes is being human. Say hello and appreciate their good work once in a while when they do a good job. It might just turn things around.
4POOR COMMUNICATION
Just like any facet of our lives, communication is key and its mastery is an asset to you and those around you. It helps manage your stress level and stress-related problems like mental disorders.
Fostering open communication is a step to cultivating good productive affinities with fellow employees and bosses. It says I respect you, value you, and I support you.
How to approach it
✓ Consult your colleagues and your bosses. If you're undertaking anything, especially those initiatives that will affect them. It will not be nice going ahead and pitching a presentation without informing your teammates. Involving them makes them feel appreciated and part of the team.
✓ Encourage feedback. Communication is two-way and so as much as you are passing the information you should also receive it. In case you are in a managerial position, you will get to know their opinions, and concerns and even get to know them personally.
✓ Create a safe space for communication. If you are too mean, intense, or unapproachable, then people will never try and tell you or even spend time with you. Create time to bond with your colleagues after work or during breaks.
5CONFLICT MANAGEMENT
Conflict and disagreements may arise at any time and it's normal because individuals are diverse and opinions are different. Conflicts should be approached swiftly but with a lot of care.
As much as it's a delicate matter, conflict at times might be a good thing as it forces employees out of their comfort zones and fosters a positive competitive culture.
How to approach it
✓ Solve it immediately. Conflicts are best addressed instantly before they gravitate to more complex situations out of your control or before they cause too much damage like loss of profits and employees.
✓ Understand the whole story. Get full information as a supervisor before coming to any judgments or conclusions. It would be biased and unfair to others if you make a ruling unfairly. Get the whole context, this will enable you to see where the truth is and where it's stemming from for you to make a fair resolution.
✓ Be present. Do not be too cooped up in your space that you are passed by everything going on among your colleagues or subordinates. Encourage communication, and set up meetings and workshops. This gives you an opportunity for you to root out conflicts on time and solve them before they escalate and affect work productivity and relations.
✓ Be calm. Do not lash out fast at others before you think. It sets a bad image of you before your colleagues or subsidiaries. Keep your emotions in check and stay professional at all times.
If you disagree with them, there's always a way you can communicate your concerns without coming across as narcissistic.
6BULLYING AND HARASSMENT
This can be verbal, physical, social, or psychological abuse by colleagues and/or bosses. This can take place in any form of employment and can happen to anyone. Examples of bullying or harassment in the workplace are listed below.
✓ Repetitive hurtful remarks that may concern your productivity, family, or origin.
✓ Exclusion or forceful or intentional removal from projects, teams, or activities.
✓ Intimidation. Intentional repetition that makes you feel less important or your contribution valueless.
✓ Physical, deliberate shoving, pushing, or grabbing.
✓ Sexual harassment. Unwelcomed remarks, looks, verbal or touch.
✓ Assigning pointless or too complicated tasks with unreasonable timeframes, purposely to humiliate and downgrade your skills.
How to approach it
✓ Report them to relevant authorities. Some forms of workplace harassment are criminal offenses and they will be held liable.
✓ Get support from others. Disclose your situation to people you trust. They might be able to help you and if you feel you have no one, then reach out to support services which will immediately come to your rescue.
✓ Confront the problem head-on. Master your confidence and approach the bully and strongly explain why whatever they're doing is unwelcome and not acceptable and that they should stop. Stand up for yourself and demand to be treated right and respectfully.
✓ Get more information. Research and understand your rights as a human being and as an employee. Know where you can get help and the right approach to the issue.
✓ Report the situation to your supervisors. They should be able to address the situation swiftly and appropriately.
Any work-related problem has a solution even if it means quitting. Do not accept being oppressed. Speak up and demand fair treatment and also treat others fairly. Work is a huge part of adult life and should be a safe place to be.
