7 SEVEN EASY TIPS TO FOSTERS HEALTHY WORK RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR BOSS
I know they can be a hard nut to crack but a good working relationship with your bosses has a tremendous impact on the progress of your career and your overall fulfillment at your workplace.
A good healthy working relationship between you and your boss is important to the boss too as it means a better understanding of their subordinates and improved productivity among their subordinates. It's a win-win situation for everyone.
A good working relationship is beneficial as it;
Improves productivity This takes place consciously or unconsciously. Research shows that individuals who work with friends and people with whom they are on good working terms are more productive. Healthy relations mean more understanding of each other and a more open flow of communication that adds value.
Transfer of skills A working relationship between employees and managers and even other coworkers means an easy transfer of knowledge and skill. As working "friends" you can easily teach and learn from each other particularly those above you who have more experience and skill and can pass it easily. This benefits both the employees and the organization as a whole.
Improves your health Stressful atmospheres mean uncomfortable situations all day. You cannot even talk with your bosses about any work concerns and this makes it hard to be productive. The strained relationship, ie your boss is being rude or uncaring, causes mental issues like depression. You will grow to hate your job and hate your boss.
Social isolation that can come about because of your colleagues at work intentionally dismissing you have been known to increase the risk of the development of serious health issues. Knowing how to build valuable relationships with your supervisors and colleagues is an important skill.
Improves employee motivation Working in a friendly environment makes you want to stay longer. It makes you want to do better for the good of the organization as a way of securing your future.
Employees' psychological well-being is shown in their actions. Happy employees are more motivated and comfortable taking initiative in the organization. It's a fulfilling feeling to have a friend as your colleague.
There are so many ways you can work toward a positive working environment in your workplace
1Engage your colleagues
Do not be a silent employee who does not talk to anyone except when the boss is asking a question. After all, everyone in your workplace including your managers is a social human being. A major aspect of building relationships is communication and spending time.
Be genuinely interested in their lives and listen attentively to them, be open and also share a bit about yourself. This personal level knowledge of those you work with establishes the basis for a healthy relationship at work. Ask questions and be ready to answer questions too.
2Attend scheduled meetings
The meetings planned should be a must-attend unless you have a valid reason not to. Those times are bonding time whether consciously or unconsciously. Taking time to talk with people even if it's about work is important. Any other gatherings, those outside work like work parties or team building are all meant to develop working relations among employees.
You can even take a step further and invite your supervisors or colleagues for coffee or lunch just to know them outside of work. The effort goes a long way and is always well appreciated by all those around you.
3Be genuine and keep your end of the bargain
Nobody likes people who are perennial liars and nothing can be expected of them. Be a trustworthy individual on whom people can rely. If your supervisors entrust you with tasks, finish them on time and do a good job. If your colleagues ask for help, be there and help as much as you can. From the first day be authentic.
According to the "Emerging Workforce" study, most workers rate relationships with their supervisor as good, great, or excellent (84%) however for the small number of people that rate the relationship as weak, it could be related to trust. Strong relationships are based on trust from both parties and it takes an open line of communication from both the employee and the supervisor to make that happen.
4Take initiative
"Take initiative to show that you know what you're doing." Says Dr. Colleen Wevodau, CPA, senior manager at Baker Tilly in Tysons, VA. " If the boss is new to the organization, offer to show them the ropes but be sure to be open to hearing about their new ideas as well.
As much as this is a good thing you should be very careful not to overdo and come across as domineering or end up setting expectations on yourself that you may not live up to." Remember, people are repelled by self-promotion and bragging.
5Have a vision
Take time to reflect on what you want to achieve in a set of time. Keep in mind the visions and ambitions of the organization as well. If need be, you can set up objectives that propel you toward your goal and keep you on your toes throughout.
• Consider the best use of your energy. "You can end up spending time on tasks that are not necessarily career their drivers," says Colleen. Take time to remind yourself of your roles and responsibilities.
• Know your roles and responsibilities. As much as it's a good thing to give a helping hand, do not end up volunteering for all and any tasks available.
• Be responsible with your time and that of those around you Be mindful of time. You should not just leave your work and do things out of work scope. You also should not bang into your supervisor's or colleagues' offices every five minutes. Respect your time and their time as well.
Talk with your supervisors about your goals. Engage them and ask them for guidance toward your ambitions. Most bosses are more than happy to guide their subordinates. Who does not like individuals who know exactly what they want? This initiative also tells the boss that you are a responsible trustworthy individual and sets a good impression on you.
6Be confident and respectful
As much as it's a good trait to present your ideas with confidence, remember your boss is your superior and you should be respectful towards them. Respect make them feel appreciated and will in turn treat you with respect too.
Respect does not mean that you are quiet and do not pitch your thoughts at all, it means knowing how to stand your ground, especially on matters that need attention.
7Communication
Try and be honest with your supervisors. Remember, open and honest communication improves transparency and accountability. Set up a time to understand your expectations at work together with your supervisors. It can be face-to-face meetings, phone calls, or reports at regular intervals, let's say every week, just to clear up uncertainties.
This keeps both of you on your toes regarding the progress and developments within the organization. It also shows that you care about what is going on and are ready to make changes and adjustments whenever necessary.
Remember everyone likes to be respected. How you make them feel is all that matters for a good relationship. " It's a matter of treating people with respect whether they are above or below you in the organization," Wavodau said.
