Cultural Conflict And Crime in Urban Areas
Introduction
Cultural conflict is a common concept in the current contemporary society because of rural-urban migration and transboundary movement of people. The interchange and mixing of cultures have led to these disagreements. Every society has its own unique culture and would preserve it by all means.
Cultural identity in urban livelihood strategies often leads to instability and violent conflict. For one to socially, politically, and economically navigate fragmented cityscapes to access a job, a piece of land, education, or politics, identity plays a crucial role.
Cultural conflict has been a cause of many crimes that take place in urban areas. The inequalities and injustices that happen due to the cultural and ethnic conflicts are beyond measure and more often than not render the qualified and deserving at a disadvantage. The feeling of rejection and neglect might make one commit crimes like murder, kidnapping, or bugging for revenge.
Culture Conflict
Maneuvering through the urban life looking for jobs or opportunities often is futile due to ethnic conflicts. The discrimination across cultural and ethnic lines may render one a thief to make ends meet.
An example of culture conflict is differing views on slavery in America which led to the Civil War in 1861. The war was fought between unions, these were the states that remained loyal to the federal Union and confederacy, and these were the states that voted to secede. The Central cause of the war was the status of slavery where the North wanted the expansion of slavery into territories they had acquired as a result of the Louisiana Purchase and the Mexican-American War.
Intensive developments of tourism as a part of globalization trends, often lead to rapid changes in local cultures of exotic territories. The negative consequences of modernization contribute to the intensification of conflicts caused by alternative perceptions of the world determined by different systems of cultural values and beliefs. Cultural conflicts are often provoked by socioeconomic situations and may lead to crime.
Case of Abortions.
Some cultures do not believe in abortions and view it as murder while others especially the current contemporary society treat it as a right for women to choose their state. This conflict due to cultural differences may lead to extreme measures where the women might be arrested for the murder of the unborn.
Changing values and lifestyles.
The changing cultural trends in foods, clothing, and gender roles may lead to crime in urban settings. The way of dressing has evolved over the years. Women have the liberty to dress the way they choose, men can keep their hair among other changes. The assumption that men who keep their hair are drug dealers or law offenders may lead to a false arrest or mob justice. The women might also be victims of harassment and rape because of their choice of clothes which is punishable by law.
Conclusion
Cultural conflicts in many instances have led to crime. This is a result of some cultural beliefs being against the law or others inflicting on human rights. Cultural conflicts have been a rising issue in urban areas due to rural-urban migration.
